Best Time to Kitesurf in Brazil: A Season-by-Season Guide
Northeast Brazil has a reputation every kiter hears secondhand long before they ever fly here: wind you can set your watch to, for months at a stretch. It's one of the only coastlines on earth where you can book a trip six months out and reasonably expect to kite every single day you're here — but 'windy season' isn't one flat block of time. The wind builds, peaks, and eases, and the difference between a June session and a September one is real.
What makes this coast reliable is that it stacks two wind systems instead of relying on one. A steady southeast trade blows year-round, and every afternoon the sun heats the interior and pulls extra air off the Atlantic on top of it. Most kite destinations lean on trades or thermals — Ceará and Maranhão get both, which is why sessions here run long and rarely get cancelled for lack of wind.
The core season runs from June through January. Wind is genuinely reliable across the whole window, in the 18 to 25 knot range on the quieter end. September, October and into November are the strongest months of the year, regularly pushing 22 to 30-plus knots on a good afternoon — this is peak season, when the coast is at its most powerful and our Advanced Downwinder from Cumbuco to Atins runs at its best.
June, July and December sit at the other end of the same season: still strong and dependable, just without the higher-end gusts of full peak season. That makes them a good window if you're newer to downwinders, or simply prefer wind that's powerful without being maxed out — both our Initiation Downwinder and the Intermediate routes between Barrinha, Tatajuba and Barra Grande work well across these months, usually with a quieter coast too.
February through April is the off-season. Wind drops and gets inconsistent, and it's not a window we'd recommend building a dedicated trip around — if those are the only dates you have, talk to us before you book anything.
One thing that doesn't change along the route is the wind pattern itself — the season dates above hold from Cumbuco through Jericoacoara and on to Atins in Maranhão. What changes is the terrain: more flat-water lagoons close to Jericoacoara, more open ocean and remote beaches as the route pushes into Maranhão. Choose your leg of the coast based on the kind of riding you want, not the calendar.
