How to Get to Jericoacoara: Flights, Transfers and the Last Stretch of Sand

Jericoacoara is famous for being hard to reach, and that is part of its charm: the village sits inside a national park, and the last kilometres are sand, not road. In practice it is simpler than it sounds. You have two airports to choose from.

Option 1: fly to Fortaleza. Fortaleza is the big international airport of the region, with flights from Europe and from all over Brazil. From there, Jericoacoara is about 300 km to the west, which is roughly five hours by road. Most travellers book a private transfer or a shared 4x4 that takes them door to door.

Option 2: fly to Jericoacoara airport. The small regional airport is in Cruz, about an hour from the village and around thirty minutes from Preá. It receives domestic flights, so you connect in a large Brazilian city such as São Paulo. The flight schedule changes with the season, so check it before you book the long-haul leg.

The last stretch is the same for everyone. Normal cars are not allowed into the village: you finish the trip in an authorised 4x4 across the dunes. If you come by regular bus or rental car, you leave it in Jijoca and change vehicle there. A private transfer does the whole trip in one go.

With kite gear, we recommend the private transfer. Board bags fit without discussion, you leave when your flight lands, and nobody has to carry a 30 kg bag from one vehicle to another in the sand.

Two practical details. The town charges visitors a small tourism fee, which you can pay online in advance or on arrival. And the streets of Jericoacoara are sand, so a bag with a shoulder strap is easier than small wheels.

If your trip starts in Cumbuco, things are even easier: Cumbuco is less than an hour from Fortaleza airport.

If you ride with us, send us your flight details. We know the drivers on this coast and we are happy to put you in touch with ones we trust.
