Things to Do in Jericoacoara for Non-Kiters
Plenty of kite destinations are wonderful for the rider and dull for everyone else. Jericoacoara is the exception. Many of its visitors have never touched a kite, and they fill their days without trouble. If you travel with a partner, friends or family who do not ride, here is what they can do while you are on the water.
Watch the sunset from the dune. Every evening, half the village climbs the Duna do Pôr do Sol to watch the sun go down into the sea. Afterwards, on the beach below, there is often a circle of capoeira. It costs nothing and it never gets old.
Walk to Pedra Furada. This natural stone arch on the shore is the postcard of Jericoacoara. You reach it on foot along the beach at low tide, or over the hill.
Spend a day at the lagoons. Lagoa do Paraíso and Lagoa Azul, on the Jijoca side, have clear fresh water and hammocks hung just above the surface. It is the classic day out, by buggy or 4x4.
Take the buggy tour to the west. It crosses the Guriú river on a small raft, stops to look for seahorses in the mangrove, and continues to the dunes and lagoon of Tatajuba. If you are kiting to Tatajuba that day, your non-kiting partner can simply ride in the support buggy and meet you at each stop.
Try another board. There are windsurf, surf and stand-up paddle lessons in the bay, and sandboarding on the dunes.
Do nothing, properly. Sand streets, no cars, hammocks, fresh fruit juice, good restaurants, and live forró music at night. Many people come to Jericoacoara for exactly this.
For couples and groups with mixed interests, we often suggest a one-day downwind: the rider gets 20 to 40 km on the water, and everybody is back together for the sunset.
