Itinerary · Cumbuco to Atins, Ceará & Maranhão, Brazil
The route
Our longest downwinder — 6 days, roughly 300km, for confident, experienced riders. Choose your half of the legendary Ceará coastline: Cumbuco to Jericoacoara, or Jericoacoara to Atins, at the edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses. Includes a private guide on the water with a briefing before and a debrief after, and buggy transport and support throughout. Price depends on the time of the season, the number of people on the downwind and the package you choose. Contact us for a quote.
How it works
Setting off from Cumbuco's dunes and lagoon, the first leg eases you into the route along open beach as the coast starts to quiet down.
The buildings thin out fast here, replaced by long stretches of open sand and small fishing communities.
One of the most scenic days on the route, tracing dunes and flat water past one of the coast's best-known kite villages.
The most isolated stretch of the week, coastline that barely sees traffic beyond the odd downwinder group.
The pace picks back up on the run into Preá, the traditional launch point for Jericoacoara's lagoon.
The final push past Jericoacoara to Tatajuba, before heading back to Jericoacoara for the night.
Flat water and small waves past the Guriú lagoon, a spot where beginners and advanced riders gather, before Tatajuba.
A wild, untouched stretch of coast — slightly choppy flats mixed with wave sections, ending at a secluded fisherman's town.
The route's biggest day so far, flat sections and choppy water around the estuary, passing remote Curimãs before the lively village of Barra Grande.
Into new territory, where the coastline gives way to the river channels and mangroves of the Parnaíba Delta.
A remote stretch as the landscape shifts toward the dune fields that lead into Maranhão.
The final leg, arriving at Atins on the doorstep of the Lençóis Maranhenses — journey's end.
When to go
The trade winds blow steady and strong along this coast from July through December, with the most reliable conditions between August and November — the best window to book any of our downwinders.
