Journey's end: flat water at the river mouth, on the doorstep of the Lençóis Maranhenses.
The spot
Atins is a remote village in Maranhão, at the edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses dune fields. It is the final stop of our Advanced Downwinder, reached after six days on the water from Jericoacoara.
The river mouth gives wide, flat water, and the setting is as wild as this coast gets: sand tracks, few buildings and dunes in every direction.
Getting there
Fly into São Luís (SLZ), travel about 4 hours by road to Barreirinhas, then continue to Atins by boat or 4x4.
Nearby spots
Caburé. A strip of sand between the Preguiças river and the ocean, facing Atins across the river mouth.
Lençóis Maranhenses. The national park of white dunes and freshwater lagoons that begins at the edge of the village.
